Frequently Asked Questions
Where does Wild West
Beef Jerky Beef come from
and how do I know it's safe? [top]
Wild West Beef Jerky is made for us by KingB, an
American (US) company with over thirty years experience in the Jerky
business. It is made in a purpose built plant in Uruguay, South
America, specially set up to cater for European needs and to utilise
the wonderful quality of beef there. To find out more detail about
the quality of beef click here
How is your jerky made?
[top]
Beef Jerky comes exclusively from top quality cattle in Uruguay.
The meat is trimmed so it's 100% visibly lean.
Then it is cut, special herbs and spices are added and it is slow-smoked
with sweet apple wood, which gives it the great, unique KingB taste
we prefer.
Our Beef Jerky is around 96% fat free, low in carbohydrates, calories, very high in protein
( up to 50%) and has an extremely long shelf life without refrigeration.
Is jerky healthy?
[top]
It is hard to find a healthier snack food. Take a look at our nutrition
page and check out the nutritional graphs!
For those trying to lose weight it is great as it has very low
calories and extremely low fat content. For those wanting to put
on muscle mass or who are involved in a physical hobby or line of
work it has the highest protein content you are likely to find in
any food. This will help rebuild aching muscles.
All in all you'd be hard pushed to find a healthier snack.
I've heard that Jerky
is used as a survival food.
Why? [top]
Our jerky is made from solid strips of beef. Once cured and smoked
it's weight has decreased by almost two thirds. Therefore, a 25g
serving of jerky has the equivalent food value of 80g's of lean
steak. However, from a moisture point of view it works out at 200%
meat, therefor a 25g bag would be the equivalent of 50g of lean
trimmed beef with normal moisture. This means that it takes up less
room and weight in a climber or trekker's luggage. The larger packets
of jerky come in resealable bags so it doesn't all have to be eaten
at once.
Our Wild West Jerky also has a very long shelf life of 18 months
so is unlikely to perish, even on the hardest of expeditions.
Arved Fuchs, the world famous explorer, uses only the highest
quality material and foods for his expeditions. In January 2000,
Arved Fuchs tested Beef Jerky on his Shackleton
2000 expedition and was completely excited about this
delicious and nutritious snack.
Beef Jerky is now an important travel snack for all his expeditions.
Recently, he even introduced Beef Jerky on a German television show!
The
Illbruck Race Team (ocean racers) have tested
and eaten Beef Jerky with great pleasure and success, partly because
nutrition plays an essential role in maintaining the crew's performance
and concentration levels during a regatta.
Beef Jerky now plays an important role in their food consumption.
It was also a delicious snack during the training in Spain (Summer
2000) and at the Sydney-Hobart Race in the southern hemisphere.
Beef Jerky will obviously play an important part as a nutritional
snack on the hardest ocean regatta in the world: The Volvo Ocean
Race, starting in Southampton, England in September 2001.
For all sailors, jerky offers a source of meat that keeps for a
year without a fridge. You can cook with it too!
We are proud to sponsor Jonathan Burleigh in his attempt at a solo Sea Kayak circumnavigation of Iceland in May 2003. The journey is set to take around three months and Jonathan will use Wild West Beef Jerky as a major source of protein for his trip. Find out more by going to his web site:

Who eats jerky? [top]
Just about everyone eats jerky. Of course vegetarians don't but
that's about it. Jerky has been the fastest growing segment of the
American snack food market for the last decade and is now found
in almost every store that sells any kind of food at all, from garage
forecourts to large supermarket chains. Initially, it was the hardworking
man and the old fashioned cowboys who used to eat it but now it
is even recommended by some as a teething aid for babies!
Jerky has been available on the continent for some
time now and between us and our European cousins we have received
over 16,000 emails about our jerky!
How does your jerky
have such a long shelf life? [top]
Our jerky bags contain small sachets of AgelessTM.
Ageless can reduce the oxygen in an airtight package down to 0,01%
(100ppm) or less to prolong the product's shelf life. Conventional
preservatives, antioxidants, gas purging and vacuum packing are
often not effective because they do not completely eliminate the
oxygen. With Ageless, the result is longer-lasting freshness and
improved quality products. AGELESS conforms with all the relevant
food laws and regulations. It has been used for decades in Japan
and America for preservation of product freshness.
N.B. Do not eat the ageless oxygen absorber!

How do I know my Credit
Card
and personal details are secure?
[top]
We use Lynx Internet Solutions ecart and SSL hosting infrastructure
for secure online transactions. You are protected by Lynx Internet
Solutions Ltd SSL (Secure Socket Layer) secure servers, and a Thawte
Digital I.D.
More:
The SSL server protects any data sent to it from your browser. It
is fully capable of using either 40 bit or 128 bit key. The key
size of your browser determines which is used. By default, most
Web browsers use 40 bit keys, as this is the current export limit
imposed by the US government. If you use a 128 bit key browser our
secure server will be able to use the higher level encryption as
well.
In addition, the Lynx Internet Solutions Ltd secure server we use
has a unique Digital ID to verify its authenticity. A Digital ID
is much like a notary's seal and signature on a paper document.
In other words, the Digital ID (sometimes called a Certificate)
is used to certify that people using SSL and other public key encryption
are who they claim to be. Web browsers are designed to refuse to
communicate using SSL with a Web server that does not have a valid
Digital ID. Digital IDs/Certificates are obtained from a Certificate
Authority (CA). The CA currently used by Lynx Internet Solutions
Ltd (our secure online transaction provider) is Thawte, and the
certificate is issued to Lynx Internet Solutions Ltd protecting
all of our online business activities.
